Her leadership roles in civic organizations and professional career in public administration, and Maribel’s readiness to offer an opinion, have made her a popular, reliable, and respected guest on a number of television and radio programs.
Maribel has a storied history of advocacy on behalf of voters in South Florida, honing her skills during the famous “hanging-chad” election cycle of 2000. As a member of the League of Women Voters, Maribel was an official monitor when the Supreme Court of the United States ended the recount in Florida and effectively awarded the Office of the President to George W. Bush.
During her tenure as President of the Miami-Dade Chapter of the League of Women Voters, the Florida League successfully challenged the 2010 redistricting process conducted by the Florida Legislature, which has created more competitive districts. Her service as a Director of the Florida League led to her selection as the first Hispanic woman to serve on the National Board of the League of Women Voters of the United States.
Maribel has a wide range of knowledge on issues crucial to South Florida, having written the Miami-Dade County Water Conservation Plan, served as Outreach Strategist for the South Florida Water Management District, served as the Executive Director of the City of Miami Commission for Women, and maintained vital statistics for the largest public hospital in Florida. Her professional career as a public administrator has spanned a wide range of activities, and Maribel developed expertise with every assignment.
Maribel is foreign born, a 1968 exile from communist Cuba, but is completely at home in the swirling milieu of the uniquely international place the world knows as Miami. A graduate of Florida International University (FIU), where she earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Maribel also holds certificates in Project Management and Executive Development and is accredited as a LEED Green Associate by the United States Green Building Council.
